Travel any highway leading into the Sierra Nevada and you’ll see sprawling subdivisions over taking family farms and ranches. Houses and shopping malls sprout where vegetables grew and cattle used to graze. Staying in agricultural in the Sierra foothills means finding a way to make profitable connections with the millions of suburban and city-dwellers living close by.
