Support your local brew

There's a controversy brewing over 2 new proposed Starbuck's stores in Grass Valley. A petition started by the local Flour Garden Bakery against the development has 1000 signatures on it. The town Council has coincidentally (they say it's not related) proposed a new zoning ordinance on new drive-through businesses. The issue has made front page news in The Union newspaper. The Alliance for Post Petroleum Economy APPLE has thrown in with the petition and is lobbying for it on their website. They link to Business Alliance for Local Living Economies BALLE resources "Why Local First." Take a look at this argument for sustainable local economies. A 2002 case study showed that every dollar spent locally had 3 times the economic impact of money spent at national retail chains. It just might ground your resolve to find a good local coffee shop in your community.

It's great to see this issue

It's great to see this issue getting attention! As a lover of local businesses, both for the quality of jobs they provide and for the unique flavor they bring to the area, I'm always sad when a chain store moves in close by. A Starbucks opened up RIGHT BESIDE my favorite Auburn coffee shop--boo! But money talks--my family and I hope that by avoiding the Starbucks and frequenting the Sierra Mountain, we can help keep the place open, and keep Auburn that much more home-towney.
