STS Project Co-Director Wins Prestigious Peabody Award!

Catherine Stifter, Saving The Sierra Project Co-Director, won her second Peabody award at a gala event at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City on Monday June 4. Stifter was honored for her work as Managing Editor on the pioneering series Crossing East: Our History, Our Stories, Our America.

Produced by MediaRites Productions, Crossing East is the first radio series to explore Asian-American history in depth. Eight, 54-minute installments drew on sources that included more than 500 hours of oral history interviews conducted for the project.

Peabody’s are granted by a 16-member board administered through the University of Georgia, the Peabody’s only criterion is excellence.

"This year the Peabody Board reviewed an amazing array of outstanding material," said Horace Newcomb, director of the Peabody Awards. "The result is that our work becomes more difficult – and more rewarding – as creators and producers of electronic media develop more and more powerful, important, and engaging work."

Marisa Guthrie, writer for Broadcasting & Cable magazine, noted: “At a time when media awards are handed out like lollipops at the bank, the Peabody Awards remains one of the highest honors in radio, cable and broadcast TV.

Congratulations Catherine!

thanks jesikah

It was truly an honor to receive the Peabody for our series, Crossing East.  Dmae and I worked with nearly 50 producers over the course of 3 years to tell first-person stories of Asian American history. Dmae's Crossing East approach, along with the Storycorps approach to personal storytelling pioneered by David Isay have inspired me in the Saving The Sierra project.  The collection of many voices for the Sierra our Storybooth and the first-person story focus in our upcoming documentary owe much to these award-winning productions.
