California Secretary of Agriculture….Really Cool Guy!

I had the pleasure of meeting California’s Secretary of Agriculture, A.G. Kawamura.  I can honestly say I have never met a politician who I believed had more of a sincere desire to serve the people.  Kawamura is by no means a politician by education or by trade; he started out a strawberry farmer.  Over the years of serving on boards and working with agricultural organizations he built a reputation as being a humble person willing to help his fellow farmer.  This eventually led to him become the Secretary of Ag in California which is a 35 billion dollar plus industry.  I had the opportunity to sit through some Q&A with him and I found him to be genuinely dedicated to public service, committed to promoting youth and instituting the next generation in ag, and he also seemed to have a strong sense of sustainability and its importance.  I was blown away to hear someone in such a public position talk about the state’s amazing future in edible landscaping, agricultural technonology, and boom of biofuels.  If you would like more information check out his bio at http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/message.htm or watch a brief clip of him at http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/agonag.htm .

Kawamura -not so cool

Read this op-ed by Albany Mayor Robert Lieber in the California Progress report for a second opinion on Secretary Kawamura: http://www.californiaprogressreport.com/2008/03/aerial_spraying.html Kawamura sure talks the talk but he showed nothing but disrespect in his dealings with affected communities in the Monterey Bay area and frankly he is a liar. He authorized an untested pesticide to be aerially sprayed over hundreds of thousands of people (millions if his plan to spray the SF Bay Area had not been halted due to public protest!), a pesticide that we now know contained ingredients that are prohibited for use on food products –let alone to be sprayed over homes, gardens, playgrounds and directly on pets, people and wildlife. To this day the Secretary insists that the spray was safe, despite hundreds of illness reports, dead seabirds and contaminated waters. Not a cool guy, no way.

I have met him on several

I have met him on several occasions and have always been impressed with him. He is a well-spoken individual with an amazing history. He has so much to offer and reminds us Californians that we are blessed with incredible agricultural surroundings.

Inspired

Chris, it is great when young folks like yourself take the time to visit with and get to know politicians. It feels rare to hear folks getting so inspired by state government leaders. Thanks for sharing.
